Mariah Behrends

Mariah Behrends, Hereford cattle, San Jose, IL, Mason County and the Illinois River Valley near Peoria. She has been breeding Hereford cattle on these grounds for nearly a decade and holds active membership in the American Hereford Association as well as participation in the National Beef Quality Assurance program. All breeding stock undergoes annual genetic and fertility screening through an accredited laboratory, and vaccinations and hoof care are managed by a local large-animal veterinarian. Animals graze on rotational pastures that shift with the seasons, and calves are handled daily to develop calm temperaments and ease the weaning process.

Feeding focuses on a balanced mix of forage and grains that is tailored to each herd’s age and production goals. The farm follows sustainable grazing methods to support soil health, enhance biodiversity, and reduce chemical inputs. Detailed records ensure pedigrees are verified, and many past calves have gone on to smallholder homesteads or specialty beef programs across Illinois.
