Frequently asked questions

How long can a racehorse name be?

The Jockey Club, which registers Thoroughbreds in North America, limits names to 18 characters including spaces and punctuation. That is why every name on this page fits within 18 characters. Count carefully before you submit, because even one extra space puts a name over the limit.

Can I name a racehorse after its sire or dam?

Yes, and it is one of the oldest traditions in racing. Owners often blend a piece of the sire's name with a piece of the dam's, or echo a theme from one side of the pedigree. A foal by a stallion named Storm out of a mare named Daybreak might become Storm at Dawn, letting fans trace the family at a glance.

Why do some racehorse names get rejected?

Registries reject names that duplicate an active or famous horse, names of living people used without their permission, and anything vulgar or misleading. The names of legendary champions are permanently retired, so no new foal can carry them. Submitting several ranked choices improves your odds of a quick approval.

What is the difference between a registered name and a stable name?

The registered name is the official name on the horse's papers, used in race entries and results. The stable name, sometimes called a barn name, is the short everyday name grooms and riders actually use. A horse registered as Fifty Length Lead might simply be Fifty around the barn.
