Frequently asked questions

What is a good name for a tortoise that lives 50 years or more?

Pick a name you will still be happy saying in a few decades, since many tortoises live 50 to 100 years and often outlast their first owner. Dignified, timeless names like Darwin, Winston, Eleanor, or Augustus age well, while a joke name can wear thin by year ten. It also helps to note the name in your estate or rehoming plans.

Should I name a turtle differently than a tortoise?

Many keepers do. Turtles live in or around water, so pond and river names like Brook, Lily, or Bayou fit them naturally. Tortoises are land animals with famously long lifespans, so they tend to collect stately old-soul names like Herman or Agatha. Puns like Shellby work happily for either.

Do turtles know their names?

Turtles do not understand names the way a dog does, but they learn feeding cues remarkably well. Many will paddle over or stretch their neck out when they hear the sounds and see the movements that come before food. Use the name consistently at feeding time and it becomes part of that cue.

What are some famous turtle names?

Real tortoises hold most of the fame: Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise hatched around 1832, is the oldest known living land animal, Harriet was long linked to Darwin's voyage, and Lonesome George was the last of his Galapagos subspecies. Fiction adds Franklin, Yertle, and the pizza-loving ninja crew. You can also create a free profile for your own turtle on Creatures to record its name, photos, and growth over the years.
