Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register my cattery name?

The major cat associations, including TICA and CFA, offer cattery name registration that reserves your prefix so no other breeder can register cats under it. It is optional but standard practice for breeders who show or sell pedigreed kittens. Each association keeps its own records, so breeders active in both often register the name in both.

Is there a length limit for cattery names?

Yes. Associations cap the total length of a registered cat's name, and your cattery prefix counts against that limit on every kitten you register. A short prefix like Starfire leaves room for creative individual names, while a long one forces cramped choices. Check your association's current rules before filing.

Should my cattery name include my breed?

Breed-forward names like Majestic Maines make your specialty instantly clear to buyers searching for that breed, which is great marketing. The tradeoff is flexibility: if you add a second breed later, the name no longer fits. If you might expand, pick an elegant neutral name and mention breeds in your listings instead.

How do I make sure my cattery name is unique?

Search the cattery name listings of the associations you plan to register with, then check general web results and social handles for close spellings. Associations reject prefixes that duplicate or closely resemble existing ones. Have two or three backup choices ready in case your first pick is already reserved.
