African Straw-Colored Fruit Bat
Eidolon helvum
A large fruit bat of sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Arabia, with a straw-yellow neck and back, duller gray-brown belly and a pointed, foxlike face. It roosts socially in trees and travels widely to feed on fruit. Zoo bat teams provide flight space, elevated roosting places and a fruit-based diet under veterinary care. Females give birth to a single young. Its yellow mantle is distinct from the darker-bodied Indian flying fox.
