American Cockroach
Periplaneta americana
The American cockroach is a large reddish-brown roach of African origin that has spread around the world. Adults have a pale border around the shield behind the head; males have wings extending beyond the abdomen. It is maintained in research and educational colonies as well as specialist collections. A secure, escape-proof enclosure needs sheltered, moist retreats, ventilation and an omnivorous diet. Females deposit egg cases. This species can infest buildings, so containment matters.
