Apache Sand Cockroach
Arenivaga apacha
The Apache sand cockroach is an Arenivaga from the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It shelters in kangaroo-rat mounds, where lined retreats retain moisture and stored plant material provides food. Males have long, mottled brown wings, while females are wingless burrowers. Specialist colonies need deep, loose organic substrate with sheltered moisture rather than exposed dry sand alone. Females lay egg cases. Fine male genital characters distinguish it from similar sand roaches.
