Archey's Frog
Leiopelma archeyi
Archey's frog is a small native frog of New Zealand's North Island forests, maintained in conservation programs. Its mottled green and brown coloring blends into damp leaf litter. Keepers use cool, moist enclosures with drainage, sheltered retreats and small invertebrate prey. Females lay eggs on land, and males guard the clutches. The young develop without free-swimming tadpoles and remain on the father's back for a time. This is a conservation animal rather than an ordinary pet.
