Marbled Spanish Isopod
Armadillidium espanyoli
The marbled Spanish isopod is an Armadillidium from Spain kept for its mottled appearance. Hobby cultures are often labeled Marbleized or Marbelized and show irregular cream and brown markings. Like other pill isopods, it can curl up for protection. Captive colonies need leaf litter, sheltered moist substrate and ventilation rather than a uniformly wet enclosure.
Females carry eggs and young in a brood pouch and release live young. Some trade stocks are labeled cf. espanyoli, indicating an identification that remains tentative.
