Armadillo officinalis
Armadillo officinalis
Armadillo officinalis is a Mediterranean pill isopod kept by hobbyists and studied for its defensive behavior. Its rounded body is usually gray to brown and can close into a tight ball. Adults can produce vibrations by rubbing specialized structures on their legs while curled up. Captive cultures need organic substrate, leaf litter, a moist refuge and airflow. Females retain eggs and developing young in a brood pouch before releasing live offspring. It belongs to Armadillo, a different genus from Armadillidium.
