Leafcutter Ant
Atta cephalotes
The leafcutter ant Atta cephalotes is a tropical American fungus-growing ant. Workers vary greatly in size; the large major workers have broad, hairy reddish heads and powerful jaws. Foragers collect plant material to cultivate the fungus that feeds the colony. Zoo colonies require secure specialist housing and a healthy fungus garden, rather than leaves alone. The queen lays eggs, and workers care for the brood. USDA APHIS regulates movement of live ants in the United States.
