Azara's Agouti
Dasyprocta azarae
Azara's agouti is a long-legged forest rodent from southern Brazil, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina. Its grizzled olive-yellow coat, rounded ears and almost invisible tail differ from the compact, tailless shape of a guinea pig. It eats fruits and seeds and gives birth to live young. Zoo collections keep this shy ground forager in planted enclosures with sheltered retreats. It is a wild South American species, distinct from domestic guinea pigs.
