Barbary Striped Grass Mouse
Lemniscomys barbarus
A small North African rodent from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, recognized by many continuous cream stripes running lengthwise through brown fur. Its thin tail and pale belly separate it from bushy-tailed striped squirrels. Specialist rodent keepers and zoos use secure indoor enclosures with dense cover and nesting material, reflecting its grassy scrub habitat. It eats plant material and invertebrates. Females give birth to litters of live young.
