Silkback
A silkback bearded dragon is a scaleless form of Pogona vitticeps, generally produced when a dragon inherits two copies of the leatherback scale trait. Instead of the normal spiny, keeled scales, silkbacks have smooth, soft-looking skin with little to no dorsal scalation, which makes their colors appear very vivid. They may be sold in red, citrus, hypo, trans, or other color combinations, but the key feature is the lack of normal protective scales. This morph is separate from a standard leatherback and has generated significant welfare debate in the hobby.
Silkbacks are best suited to highly experienced keepers or specialty rescues because their skin is more vulnerable to scratches, drying, stuck shed, and burns from unsafe heat sources. They still require the heat, UVB, space, and diet of a central bearded dragon, but the enclosure must be checked carefully for rough branches, sharp stone, overly hot surfaces, and shedding trouble. Routine observation matters more than cosmetic appeal. Many breeders avoid pairings that intentionally produce silkbacks, and anyone considering one should ask how it was bred, whether it has a history of skin problems, and whether a reptile veterinarian is available.
