The black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) is a small North American mustelid specialized for life in prairie dog colonies. It has a pale body, black mask, black feet, and a long low shape suited to moving through burrows. Prairie dogs make up most of its diet and provide the tunnel systems where ferrets rest and raise young. The species nearly disappeared in the twentieth century before a tiny surviving population became the foundation for intensive recovery work.

For black-footed ferrets, the practical setting is recovery work rather than pet ownership. Programs pair captive breeding and genetic planning with vaccination, plague control, and releases on prairie dog complexes large enough for hunting and denning. Field crews use spotlight surveys, microchips, radio collars, and burrow checks to follow reintroduced animals. Domestic ferrets are a different animal and should not be confused with this endangered wild species. Landowner cooperation matters because grazing, poisoning, disease control, and prairie dog management all affect whether colonies can support ferrets. Zoos in the breeding network need strict biosecurity and carefully planned transfers.
