Brazilian Guinea Pig
Cavia aperea
This wild South American cavy has a stocky brown body, pale underside and no conspicuous external tail. It is distinct from the domestic guinea pig and lives in grassland and dense ground cover. Zoo and specialist small-mammal teams provide covered ground space, hiding places and forage for this grazing rodent. Forefeet have four toes and hindfeet three. Females give birth to developed, furred young that can move soon after birth.
