Brow-Antlered Deer
Rucervus eldii
Eld's deer live in seasonally dry forest and grassland in South and Southeast Asia. Males have long curved antler beams and prominent forward brow tines, unlike the many upright branches of barasingha. Zoo conservation teams manage herds with covered retreats, outdoor grazing space and separate holding areas. Females give birth to a single live fawn. The species is US ESA endangered and CITES Appendix I listed; recognized regional forms have separate breeding programs.
