Brown-Tailed Vontsira
Salanoia concolor
This small Malagasy carnivore has a plain brown coat, rounded ears and a furry tail. It belongs to Madagascar's own carnivore family, despite its mongoose-like appearance. Specialist zoo collections keep it, with secure quarters, retreat spaces and opportunities to forage. Females bear live young. The current Mammal Diversity Database includes the Lake Alaotra animal formerly named Salanoia durrelli in this species; the portrait shows the unstriped forest form.
