California Mountain Kingsnake
Lampropeltis zonata
This red, black and pale-banded snake occurs in western North American mountain habitats. Reptile hobbyists breed it in secure enclosures with hides, water, burrowing cover and a controlled heat gradient. Females lay eggs. Adults often accept mice, but hatchlings may need experienced help to establish feeding.
Lampropeltis multifasciata is an older scientific synonym here. California requires a fishing license for sport take, generally limits take and possession to one, excludes protected forms and closes seven southern counties to collection.
