Cape Buffalo
Syncerus caffer
A massive African bovid with a broad muzzle, heavy horns and a dark coat in the southern Cape form pictured. Mature males develop a thick horn boss over the forehead; forest forms are smaller and redder. Zoo hoofstock teams manage these powerful herd animals with strong barriers, protected holding space, grazing and reliable water. Females give birth to a live calf. Florida lists the Cape form as Class I wildlife, requiring a possession permit and prohibiting personal-pet ownership.
