Caracal caracal

The caracal, Caracal caracal, is a medium-sized wild cat of Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Central and South Asia. It has a short tawny coat, long legs, a compact athletic body, and tall black ear tufts that make its outline easy to recognize. Caracals hunt rodents, hares, birds, small antelope, and other prey, and they can leap vertically when catching birds. They use savanna, scrub, semi-desert, woodland, and rocky country rather than dense rainforest.

Caracals appear in exotic pet discussions, but they are wild carnivores that require permits, secure facilities, and experienced care where ownership is legal at all. Zoos and sanctuaries provide protected keeper access, climbing and hiding areas, whole-prey or balanced carnivore diets, and enrichment that channels stalking, jumping, and scent investigation. Around farms, conflict prevention can include secure poultry housing and livestock management instead of retaliation. Breeding or transfers should document origin and avoid presenting hand-raised cats as domestic substitutes, since adult behavior remains powerful and unpredictable.
