Aegean
The Aegean is a natural domestic cat landrace associated with Greece's Cycladic islands and the wider Aegean region. It developed from local island cats rather than from a tightly controlled show-breed program, which is why type can vary more than in long-established pedigreed breeds. Aegean cats are usually medium-sized, athletic, and semi-longhaired, with a coat that is commonly mostly white with tabby, black, blue, red, cream, or tortoiseshell patches. Many have expressive greenish eyes and a practical, weather-aware look shaped by life around harbors, homes, and fishing villages.
In Greece, Aegeans may be family companions, working mousers, or community cats, while outside the region they are still uncommon and may not have major-registry recognition. Adopters should clarify whether a cat is a pedigreed Aegean, a local rescue from the islands, or a domestic cat with a similar pattern. Care is straightforward: a complete cat diet, parasite control for cats with outdoor access, and seasonal brushing for the coat. Safe containment is worth planning, since many Aegean-type cats are confident climbers and hunters.
