Russian Black
The Russian Black is a black-coated breed or variety developed from Russian Blue-related breeding in some cat fancy programs, especially outside the older Russian Blue standard. It aims to retain the foreign body, green eyes, and plush short coat associated with Russian cats while replacing classic blue-gray color with solid black. Recognition varies widely, and many registries do not place Russian Black on the same footing as the Russian Blue.
A Russian Black should be identified through registry and pedigree context, not simply by coat color. Many black domestic cats make fine pets but have no connection to Russian breeding programs. Owners can expect easy short-coat maintenance, routine play, and careful feeding to preserve the cat's lean outline. Breeders working with Russian Black lines should be transparent about accepted colors, outcross history, and eye-color goals. For buyers, the central questions are documentation, health, temperament, and whether the cat is registered under a system that recognizes the variety.
