Selkirk Rex
Selkirk Rex cats have a dense, curled coat that can appear in shorthaired or longhaired form, with loose waves through the body, whiskers, and sometimes eyebrows. The breed began in Montana from a naturally curly-coated kitten and was developed with outcrosses that helped set a sturdy, rounded type. Unlike the Cornish Rex or Devon Rex, the Selkirk curl is plush and woolly rather than sleek or sparse.
Living with a Selkirk Rex means learning the coat instead of brushing it flat. Gentle combing, occasional bathing, and attention to mats around the armpits, belly, and collar area are more useful than heavy daily brushing. Breeders manage curl, coat length, body type, and compatible outcross history, while owners should ask about grooming expectations and any line-specific health screening. A good Selkirk feels substantial, sociable, and a little tousled without looking neglected.
