Africangus
The name Africangus is generally used for Afrikaner-Angus composite cattle, developed to combine the beef shape and carcass traits of Angus with the heat tolerance, walking ability, and maternal toughness of African adapted cattle. Use of the name is not as uniform worldwide as older registered breeds, so herds may differ in the percentage of Angus and Afrikaner blood they carry. Animals are usually selected as practical beef cattle rather than as a dairy or draft type, and both red and black Angus influence may be seen depending on the program.
In commercial herds, Africangus cattle suit ranches that want Angus-style calves from cows expected to handle sun, rough pasture, ticks, and seasonal nutrition better than many temperate breeds. Breeding decisions normally focus on fertility, calf weaning weight, moderate cow size, and temperament at handling. Anyone buying breeding stock should ask how the composite has been stabilized, what performance records are available, and whether the line was raised under conditions similar to the new farm.
