Alistana-Sanabresa
Alistana-Sanabresa cattle are a rustic Spanish breed from the Aliste and Sanabria areas of Zamora, near the Portuguese border. They developed in hilly and mountain country where small farms needed cattle that could work, rear calves, and use coarse grazing. The breed is typically chestnut to dark brown, with lighter shading around the muzzle and eyes, pale horns with dark tips, and a compact, muscular body suited to beef production.
Today the Alistana-Sanabresa is kept mainly as a suckler-cow breed in extensive systems, often on rough pasture, woodland edges, and summer mountain grazing. It is valued for hardiness, calving ease, and the ability to raise a calf without intensive feeding. Numbers are limited, so breeding programs in Spain emphasize maintaining pure lines while still selecting for functional udders, feet, fertility, and manageable temperaments. Buyers should expect a local conservation breed, not a high-input dairy animal.
