American Milking Devon
American Milking Devon cattle are a rare American strain descended from red Devon cattle brought from England to New England in the colonial period. Unlike modern Beef Devon lines, they have been maintained as a triple-purpose breed for milk, meat, and trained ox work. They are medium-sized, deep red, horned cattle with an active, thrifty build and a reputation among heritage livestock keepers for sound feet, rich milk, and usefulness on forage.
Most herds are small conservation or homestead herds, so purebred breeding depends on careful exchange of animals and attention to pedigrees. They suit pasture-based systems where moderate production, calving ease, and temperament matter more than maximum output. Horns require space at feed bunks and confident handling, especially with working steers. Prospective buyers should confirm registration status, because crossing to Beef Devon or commercial cattle can quickly blur the qualities that make this old milking line worth preserving.
