Asturian Valley
Asturian Valley cattle, or Asturiana de los Valles, are a Spanish beef breed from the valleys and lower mountain country of Asturias. They are larger and more muscular than the Asturian Mountain type, usually carrying a wheaten, red, or chestnut coat with lighter underparts and dark points. Many lines are noted for the culón double-muscling gene, which can produce high-yielding carcasses and a very full hindquarter, although breeders differ in how strongly they select for that trait.
The breed is kept in purebred suckler herds and used in crossbreeding where lean beef yield, growth, and good pasture performance are priorities. Heavily muscled matings call for sensible bull choice and calving supervision, especially on heifers, while more moderate lines may fit easier-calving farm systems. In Asturias, calves may enter regional quality schemes such as Ternera Asturiana, so buyers and breeders should understand the local rules as well as the animal's muscle score, maternal history, and temperament.
