Aubrac
Aubrac cattle come from the Aubrac plateau of south-central France, a high, windy area of the Massif Central spanning parts of Aveyron, Cantal, and Lozère. They are tawny to wheaten cattle with black skin, a dark muzzle, black-rimmed eyes, dark points, and lyre-shaped horns in horned lines. Once a multipurpose breed for draught work, milk, and beef, the Aubrac is now best known as a hardy suckler cow for grassland and mountain systems.
Farmers use Aubrac cows where fertility, sound feet, and efficient grazing matter more than maximum frame size. The breed is associated with transhumant summer pasture and winter feeding on hay or silage, so management often centers on body condition through long seasons rather than heavy concentrate use. Aubrac bulls are also used for crossing on dairy or beef cows to add calving ease and maternal hardiness, but buyers should still check temperament, horn status, and local breeding objectives.
