Austrian Simmental
Austrian Simmental cattle are the Austrian Fleckvieh population of Simmental-derived cattle, a dual-purpose breed used for both milk and beef. Their ancestry traces to the wider Simmental cattle of the Alpine region, but Austrian breeding has long selected for cows that can produce saleable milk while raising sturdy calves and finishing useful beef animals. Most are red, yellow-red, or tan with white markings, often with a white head, pale lower legs, and a strong, roomy body.
The breed is common in Austrian dairy and mixed farms, where forage, mountain pastures, and indoor winter housing all influence management. Compared with specialized dairy breeds, milk yield is usually balanced with muscle, fertility, and calf value; compared with beef-only Simmental lines, udder quality and milkability are central selection points. Herd managers watch hoof durability, udder attachment, and calving ease, especially when using artificial insemination sires. Outside Austria, buyers should distinguish Austrian dual-purpose Fleckvieh genetics from beef Simmental programs selected for heavier terminal calves.
