Belgian Red
Belgian Red refers to a red-coated cattle breed or regional type from Belgium, especially associated with Flemish and western Belgian dual-purpose cattle. It is separate from the much more specialized Belgian Blue and has traditionally been valued for a balance of milk, beef, fertility, and farm utility. Animals are usually red to deep red, sometimes with small white markings depending on the line and registry usage. The breed belongs to domestic cattle, Bos taurus, and reflects the older northern European practice of keeping cattle that could milk, raise a calf, and still produce a useful carcass.
Modern Belgian Red herds are usually managed in small dairy, suckler, or conservation settings rather than as a large global commercial breed. Good grazing, winter forage, sound feet, and practical cow longevity are important selection points. Because names and herdbook categories can overlap with red pied or red-and-white Belgian cattle, buyers should check the exact registry, pedigree, and breeding aim behind a herd. For preservation breeders, maintaining unrelated family lines may be as important as production traits.
