Bianca Modenese
The Bianca Modenese, also called Modenese or Bianca Val Padana in some contexts, is an Italian cattle breed from the Modena area of Emilia-Romagna. It is a pale white to light gray Bos taurus breed, with darker shading or pigmentation sometimes visible around the muzzle, skin, hooves, or horn tips. Historically it was a triple-purpose farm animal, providing milk, meat, and draught power on mixed farms. Today it is best known as a local dual-purpose breed, with milk suited to traditional hard-cheese production, including regional Parmigiano Reggiano supply chains where permitted by the dairy system.
Bianca Modenese cattle are generally managed in small to medium herds, often with a mix of housed feeding and pasture depending on the farm. Conservation breeding is important because numbers have been reduced by the spread of more specialized dairy and beef breeds. Producers selecting cows look for udder function, fertility, calm handling, and sound legs, while also retaining the breed's pale coat and local identity. Buyers should check herdbook status and disease records, especially if purchasing for cheese-oriented milk production or a heritage breeding program.
