Brown Carpathian
Brown Carpathian, also called Carpathian Brown in English sources, is a regional cattle breed of the Carpathian mountain area, especially western Ukraine and neighboring uplands. It was shaped from local mountain cattle with influence from brown Alpine dairy breeds, giving it a compact dairy-beef type rather than an extreme milk cow. Typical animals are brown to gray-brown, strong-legged, and built for walking to pasture on broken ground.
Small farms keep Brown Carpathian cattle for household milk, calves, and use of steep grassland that would be difficult for larger specialized breeds. Management is usually based on summer grazing and conserved hay, so body condition before winter and mineral supplementation matter. Population size and naming can vary between local records and translations, making source documentation useful for breeders. Conservation work focuses on keeping adapted mountain genetics while avoiding indiscriminate upgrading to higher-output dairy cattle.
