Brown Caucasian
The name Brown Caucasian is used for brown dairy-beef cattle associated with the Caucasus and Transcaucasian mountain regions. These cattle were developed from local stock with influence from brown European dairy breeds, then selected under hill pastures, hot valleys, and winter housing. They are generally moderate in size, brown or gray-brown, with a practical frame for milk production, calf rearing, and movement over uneven ground.
Where they are still maintained, Brown Caucasian cattle fit family dairies and mixed farms that need a cow able to use local forage rather than only high-input rations. Good shelter, enough winter feed, and access to clean water are more important than heavy grain feeding in many traditional systems. Because the name may appear in different languages and regional herdbooks, buyers and conservation herds should confirm the exact strain, ancestry, and breeding goals before treating animals as a uniform breed.
