Danish Red
Danish Red cattle, or Red Danish Dairy Cattle, are Denmark's traditional red dairy breed, known in Danish as Rød Dansk Malkerace. They trace to regional red cattle from the Danish islands and Jutland, refined with organized recording and selection for milk, beef usefulness, fertility, and soundness. The breed is usually solid red to deep reddish brown, medium to large in frame, and less angular than extreme dairy types in many older lines. Modern Danish Red genetics are also part of the broader Scandinavian red dairy tradition, so the name may be used for both heritage Red Dane cattle and contemporary red dairy breeding lines.
Danish Reds are used in dairy herds where milk components, health traits, and reliable reproduction matter alongside yield. They can work in grazing or housed systems if rations match production level and cows receive routine foot, udder, and transition-cow care. Calves and cull cows generally have more beef value than very specialized dairy breeds, which is one reason the breed has long appealed to mixed farms. Breeders comparing Danish Red animals should check whether they are choosing old-line conservation stock, modern red dairy genetics, or crossbred Scandinavian red cattle, as management goals and records can differ.
