Estonian Red
Estonian Red cattle are a Baltic red dairy breed developed in Estonia from local cows improved with Angler, Danish Red, and related red dairy genetics. They are medium-sized cattle, usually solid red to reddish brown, with selection centered on milk production, useful butterfat and protein, fertility, and udders that suit machine milking. The breed once formed a large share of Estonia's dairy herd and remains distinct from simply any red-colored dairy cow.
On farms, Estonian Reds are managed as practical dairy cattle for stall-and-pasture or silage-based systems. Their appeal is often a balance of milk, components, fertility, and durability rather than the highest possible volume. Breeding choices should pay attention to udder structure, feet and legs, calving ease, and the amount of outside red dairy influence in a line. Buyers looking for conservation or purebred breeding stock should confirm that animals are recorded as Estonian Red, while commercial herds may use them for functional red dairy traits in mixed herds.
