Fjäll
Fjäll cattle, or Swedish Mountain Cattle, are a native Swedish dairy breed from the northern uplands and forest-farm regions. Known in Sweden as Fjällko, they are usually small, naturally polled cattle with a light or white base coat marked by black, red, or brown points and patches. The breed developed where long winters, rough grazing, and short growing seasons favored a thrifty cow that could still provide household milk.
Today Fjäll cattle are kept by small dairies, family farms, conservation graziers, and rare-breed programs. They generally produce less milk than specialized dairy breeds, but their milk solids, calving ease, hardiness, and manageable size can be attractive in low-input or northern systems. They still need good winter forage, shelter from wind and wet, minerals, fencing, and routine hoof and udder care. Some conservation programs distinguish old Fjällnära lines from broader Fjäll breeding, so source and strain matter when buying animals for preservation.
