Friesian Red and White
Friesian red and white cattle are red-pied dairy cattle associated with the Friesian and Holstein-Friesian breed family. Their coloring comes from red coat genetics within cattle otherwise selected for the familiar Friesian dairy type: capacious udders, a dairy frame, and efficient conversion of forage and concentrate into milk. In some countries the name may refer to traditional red-and-white Friesian lines, while elsewhere similar animals are registered as Red Holstein, red factor Holstein-Friesian, or a related dairy population.
Management is much the same as for other dairy Friesians, with close attention to ration quality, hoof health, fertility, mastitis control, and comfortable housing or pasture access. The red-and-white coat can be important for breed societies, shows, and buyers who want a specific registry category, but production traits and family records are more useful than color alone. Small farms may appreciate the more moderate traditional Friesian type where it exists, while high-input dairies often choose modern red Holstein genetics for milk yield. Clarifying the registry and breeding background prevents confusion when purchasing calves, cows, or semen.
