Hays Converter
Hays Converter cattle are a Canadian beef breed developed in Alberta by Senator Harry Hays, using breeds such as Holstein, Hereford, and Brown Swiss to build a fast-growing, efficient beef animal. The breed is notable as a purpose-made Canadian composite rather than an old landrace. Selection emphasized growth, feed conversion, fertility, and performance in western Canadian conditions, with cattle often appearing black or dark colored.
On farms and ranches, Hays Converters are most relevant where producers want beef calves that grow efficiently and cows that can work in a cool or variable climate. Herd records matter because the breed's story is tied to performance selection. Buyers should ask about birth weights, mature cow size, calving ease, and carcass data, especially if using bulls in crossbreeding. Good management focuses on practical beef traits, sound feet and legs, and replacements that fit the available feed base.
