Hinterwald
Hinterwald cattle, also known as Hinterwalder, are a small mountain cattle breed from the southern Black Forest of Germany and neighboring alpine foothills. They are related to the larger Vorderwald but are lighter, nimble, and better suited to steep, fragmented pastures. Coats are usually white with red, yellow, brown, or speckled patches, and many animals have a pale face with short horns. Historically they served as dual-purpose farm cattle, supplying milk, calves, and draft-like usefulness for families working difficult upland ground.
Today the breed is kept by conservation breeders, small dairies, suckler-cow herds, and landscape managers who value sure-footed cattle that can graze slopes larger dairy breeds may damage or avoid. Hinterwalds are not high-volume milk specialists, so feeding and breeding plans usually emphasize fertility, longevity, easy calving, and functional udders rather than maximum output. Their small size makes them attractive for low-input farms, but they still require secure handling, mineral balance, and winter forage. Because numbers are limited, herd-book records and avoidance of close inbreeding are important parts of stewardship.
