Japanese Polled
Japanese Polled is one of the lesser-known Japanese beef cattle breeds, developed from Japanese cattle with polled influence, often associated with Angus ancestry introduced to remove horns. It belongs in the wider Wagyu context but is distinct from Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Shorthorn, and its own small breed population. The animals are typically black and naturally hornless, with selection directed toward beef use.
Because Japanese Polled cattle are uncommon, breeding and conservation records are especially important. Hornless genetics can reduce dehorning needs, but producers still need to evaluate fertility, growth, carcass merit, and adaptation to their management system. Outside Japan, anyone encountering the breed should verify semen, embryo, or pedigree documentation carefully because the name can be confused with polled Wagyu marketing. Stewardship is as much about preserving a rare line as producing beef.
