Kalmyk
Kalmyk cattle are a hardy beef breed associated with Kalmykia and the steppe regions of southern Russia, with roots in cattle kept by nomadic and semi-nomadic herders. They are often red, sometimes with white markings, and are valued for surviving wide temperature swings, sparse grazing, and long movement across open country. The breed's importance comes from adaptation to harsh range conditions rather than extreme size or intensive feeding.
Management of Kalmyk cattle usually emphasizes grazing ability, maternal soundness, and resilience. Cows need to calve, breed back, and maintain condition where forage quality may change sharply by season. Conservation and breeding programs benefit from records on lineage, mature weight, fertility, and performance under low-input conditions. Producers considering Kalmyk genetics should compare them with local range needs, because their strengths are most visible where cattle must work on tough country.
