Kangayam
Kangayam cattle are an Indian zebu breed from Tamil Nadu, especially associated with the Kangayam region and traditional dry-zone farming. They are usually gray to white, with strong shoulders, a compact body, and the hump and horns typical of zebu cattle. Historically they have been valued as draught animals, particularly for cart work and field work, while cows provide modest milk suited to low-input village systems.
The breed's practical strength is endurance under heat, sparse feed, and long working days rather than high dairy output. Conservation herds and farmers need to protect sound feet, strong legs, fertility, and true regional type as mechanization reduces demand for draught cattle. Buyers should ask about origin, horn shape, temperament, and whether animals come from recognized native-breed lines. Good stewardship keeps Kangayam cattle useful, not just preserved as a name.
