Kankrej
Kankrej cattle are a large Indian zebu breed from Gujarat and Rajasthan, with silver-gray to darker gray coats, lyre-shaped horns, a prominent hump, and strong draft ability. They are dual-purpose animals, producing milk while also supplying powerful bullocks for work. The breed has influenced tropical cattle breeding beyond India because of its heat tolerance, disease resistance, and ability to handle difficult grazing conditions. In India it is associated with village herds, pastoral movement, and low-input production where endurance matters.
Farmers keep Kankrej cattle where durability matters as much as production. Cows need management that supports milk yield without ignoring calf growth, body condition, and reproductive rhythm, while working bullocks require sound feet and joints. Breeders should document native-line origin and avoid selecting only for size if it weakens fertility or utility. For buyers, true Kankrej type, temperament, udder quality, and adaptation to local climate are more important than color alone.
