Kasaragod Dwarf
Kasaragod Dwarf cattle are a small native cattle type from the Kasaragod district of Kerala in southern India. They are noted for very compact size, zebu features, and adaptation to humid, hilly, low-input village conditions. Milk yield is modest, but the breed is valued for hardiness, efficient maintenance, and the cultural and genetic importance of a true dwarf local cattle population.
These cattle suit smallholders who need animals that fit limited land, local forage, and household-scale management. Their small size does not remove the need for mineral nutrition, shelter from heavy rain, parasite control, and careful calf care. Conservation is important because indiscriminate crossing can erase the traits that make the breed useful. Breeders and buyers should document local origin, mature size, fertility, and family lines rather than selecting only the tiniest animals.
