Lithuanian Red
Lithuanian Red cattle are a red dairy breed from Lithuania, formed from local red cattle and improved over time with related red dairy breeds such as Angler, Danish Red, and other Baltic or northern European red cattle. They are usually solid red to red-brown, medium-framed, and selected for milk with useful fat and protein rather than for extreme size. The breed developed under Lithuanian farm conditions, where cattle needed to produce through cold winters, pasture seasons, and mixed feeding systems.
In working herds, Lithuanian Reds are managed much like other red dairy cattle: reliable forage, mineral balance, clean milking routines, and attention to fertility and udder health. Some farms value them for durability and components, while others have introduced Red Holstein or other red genetics for higher production. That makes breeding goals important. A conservation-minded herd will try to retain Lithuanian Red type and local ancestry, while a commercial herd may focus more on milk volume and crossbreeding performance. Sound feet and legs are worth watching in both settings.
