Lucerna
Lucerna cattle are a Colombian dual-purpose breed developed in the Valle del Cauca region from crossing dairy and beef-influenced cattle, commonly including Holstein, Shorthorn, and the local Harton del Valle background. The breed was selected for tropical dairy and meat usefulness rather than for a single specialized trait. Red coloring is common, and the practical identity is a productive cow that can work in warm, humid conditions.
For farms, Lucerna cattle are most interesting where milk, calves, and adaptation all matter. They need better nutrition than very low-output native cattle, but they are meant to handle tropical conditions more realistically than many imported temperate dairy breeds. Breeders should keep records on milk, fertility, udder soundness, growth, and longevity, because the breed's value lies in balanced performance. Buyers should ask about Colombian line history, herd testing, and how animals perform under similar forage and climate.
