Maramureş Brown
The Maramureş Brown, or Brown of Maramureş, is a Romanian regional cattle population from the Maramureş area of the northern Carpathians. It is generally treated as a local form within the broader brown cattle tradition influenced by Brown Swiss and native Carpathian stock. Animals are usually brown to gray-brown with a lighter muzzle ring and a practical medium frame suited to hill farms. The type was valued as dual-purpose cattle, giving family milk while still producing calves and enough strength for work in small mixed farms.
In human care, Maramureş Brown cattle make sense in forage-based systems where hardiness, walking ability and fertility are more important than maximum specialized dairy output. They need sound winter feed, shelter from prolonged cold rain or snow, and regular hoof and parasite management on wet pastures. Conservation interest centers on retaining the local adaptation that can disappear when herds are heavily upgraded with high-yielding dairy genetics. Buyers should ask whether animals are from documented regional lines or simply brown crossbred cattle from the area.
