Mertolenga
Mertolenga cattle are a native Portuguese breed from the Alentejo, especially the country around Mertola and the lower Guadiana. They are medium-sized, hardy cattle selected for extensive beef production on dry, low-fertility rangeland. The breed is recognized in several coat patterns, including solid red, red roan, and red-pied animals, often with pale horns and a functional, active frame. Mertolenga cows are valued less for heavy mature size than for fertility, mothering ability, and the capacity to raise calves where forage is seasonal.
Herds are commonly managed on montado landscapes of cork oak, holm oak, scrub, and natural pasture, with supplementation during drought or poor winter growth. The breed works well in suckler systems and is also used in crossbreeding where a hardy maternal base is needed. Purebred programs and certified local beef schemes have helped keep the breed visible, so breeding stock should be selected for sound feet, udders, temperament, and adaptation to the target grazing environment.
