Norwegian Red
Norwegian Red is Norway's national red dairy cattle breed, built through coordinated breeding of native red-and-white cattle with selected Nordic and international dairy genetics. Animals are medium framed and most are red and white or red with white markings, though darker individuals occur. Polled genetics are common. Selection has long combined milk yield with fertility, udder health, mastitis resistance, calving ease, and longevity, making the breed widely known in dairy crossbreeding programs rather than only in purebred Norwegian herds.
Norwegian Red cattle are used in grazing-based Norwegian farms, housed winter systems, and international herds seeking a more functional dairy cow. They respond well to high-quality forage and balanced rations, but their main attraction is often fewer reproductive and health problems under commercial conditions. Crosses with Holstein are common, so semen buyers and cattle purchasers should check breed percentage, health indexes, calving traits, and polled status rather than relying on color. Regular hoof care and mastitis monitoring remain necessary in intensive dairies.
